Boston's Leader Mayor Wu Addresses President Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Matches from City

The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, suggested that the municipality was prepared for a dispute with President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, situated approximately 35 kilometers south-west of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a local podcast recently to address comments from the White House, which had labeled her as "far-left." Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."

A great deal of it is locked down by agreement so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.

Wu added, "We live in a time where for drama, for power, to test limits ... ongoing threats ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and comply or follow along to a hateful agenda."

She also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging Boston's values." Wu finished by stressing her commitment for the city, declaring, "Ten toes down for our city."

The President's Statements and FIFA Role

Earlier this week, Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also been to the Oval Office and presented World Cup tournament and club championship trophies to Trump as presents.

Earlier, Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that included a police vehicle being burned. Trump responded, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Infantino – the head of the organization, who's phenomenal."

He continued, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Wu, saying, "Their mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Previous Warnings and Upcoming Tournament Information

Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about relocating games from other host cities, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.

The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The 48-team event is scheduled to be played from June 11 to 19 July in the coming year.
